Surface Buds? Microsoft working on its own Apple AirPods competitor, report says

Microsoft's Surface-branded true wireless earbuds are reportedly in the pipeline to take on Apple's AirPods.

"According to multiple sources who are familiar with the company's plans, Microsoft is now working on a pair of earbuds under the code name of Morrison", wrote Sams.

Wireless headphones were already an unusual offshoot for the Surface line, which has otherwise focused on PCs and PC peripherals.

Apple went to great lengths to make its AirPods wireless Bluetooth earbuds stand out, building their own wireless chips allowing seamless syncing with Apple products.

Microsoft surprised the world by releasing the surprisingly good Surface Headphones last October.

The device is being developed as part of a secret project, codenamed 'Morrison, ' and could be coming as soon as later this year. Just days after it was reported that Amazon is developing Alexa powered ear buds, Thorott reports that Microsoft is set to toss its hat into the ring, according to sources familiar with Redmond's plans.

The Surface Buds will likely come with Microsoft's AI assistant, Cortana, integrated into them, meaning users would be able to control the device with their voice.

When it comes to features, it's not yet clear how Microsoft wants its earbuds to differentiate from the other similar products on the market. With Cortana being what it is, it's hard to get excited about these rumored earbuds, but more competition is still welcome. However, they could officially debut simply as the Surface Buds.

Microsoft has not confirmed the report and as such, there is no timetable for the earbuds release. We may see a prototype - if one exists - by the end of the year.
