New York Islanders Three Takeaways from 4-1 Win vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

The Islanders forward scored a goal for the third straight playoff contest as his team defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 on Sunday and took a 3-0 stranglehold on their first-round series. They've outscored Pittsburgh 11-5 through three games and have trailed for less than four minutes through nine-plus periods against a team that began the playoffs looking to capture its third Stanley Cup in four years, a dream that's all but vanished. Matt Murray made 31 saves on 34 shots in the defeat.

It didn't last. Eberle tied it 28 seconds later and Nelson's wrist shot put NY in front to stay just 1:02 after Eberle's third playoff goal in as many games.

"You've got to find ways to score goals this time of year", Crosby said. The Penguins have only been swept in a series three times in their history, most recently by the Bruins in the 2013 Eastern Conference final.

And then 62 seconds after that, a bad read from Penguins defenseman Justin Schultz led to a 2-on-1 break for the Islanders, where Brock Nelson beat Murray inside the far post for a 2-1 advantage the Islanders would take into the third period.

It didn't quite work.

The offense for Pittsburgh was stagnated in the Game 2 3-1 loss to the Islanders as it fell into a 2-0 series deficit. Look for the Penguins to get a game back this afternoon.

Now they find themselves in a spot that seemed improbable at best a week ago: heading to Game 4 with a chance to make Pittsburgh's playoff stay the shortest of the Crosby/Malkin era. It's going to be tough for the Penguins to secure a victory in NY, but it's critical if they want any hope of winning the series.
