FBI looks for woman 'infatuated' with Columbine school shooting

Columbine High School, along with several other Colorado schools, was placed on lockout as law enforcement investigated what appeared "to be a credible threat" Tuesday.

"We consider her a credible threat to the community", Phillips said.

The FBI and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said Sol Pais, an 18-year-old white woman, traveled to Colorado on Monday night and made threats against schools.

A bulletin sent to local police said authorities do not have probable cause to arrest Pais, but that she should be detained for a mental health evaluation.

Investigators say she was last seen in the foothills west of Denver, where some of the schools put on lockdown are located.

Sheriff's spokesman Mike Taplin said the threats she made were general, not specific to any school.

The announcement of closures in metro-area school districts came in a tweet from the Colorado Department of Education shortly before midnight. The students walked to crosswalks and buses parked near the entrance.

Jenny Fulton, another sheriff's spokesperson, said the FBI was investigating the apparent threat. "We will have extra safety and security staff on site at all schools affected", Jefferson County Public Schools said.

The alert came four days before the 20th anniversary of the April 1999 massacre at Columbine, when two heavily armed students stormed the suburban Denver high school and fatally shot 12 classmates and a teacher before committing suicide.

Tuesday's lockout, less serious than a public safety "lockdown", means activities inside schools may continue as usual but entry and exit are restricted, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said on Twitter.

Please call the Federal Bureau of Investigation tipline at (303) 630-6227 where your call will be answered immediately if you have seen this individual or have information on her whereabouts. Multiple schools are on lockout in Columbine area & Mountains.

Officials didn't provide further details or reveal where Pais traveled from, saying it would compromise their investigation.

In a Tuesday night press conference, Phillips said Pais expressed an "infatuation with Columbine" and the two teenage gunmen who perpetuated the shooting in past comments. There was no immediate indication whether there was any connection to the anniversary.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said deputies were posted at the schools involved.

The 20th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine will take place this Saturday.
