College Senior Falls to Her Death From Fordham University

A 22-year-old student was killed after tripping and falling from Fordham University's clock tower.

Students packed the University church in the Bronx Sunday night to pray for the family of 22-year-old Sydney Monfries.

A Fordham University senior, just weeks away from graduation, died after climbing the school's clock tower and falling almost 30 feet inside the structure Sunday. While climbing the set of stairs, Monfries was said to have fallen almost 40 feet through an opening in the 83-year-old structure's first landing.

She was safely returned to the ground after being lifted out of one of the tower's windows and rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was placed on life support in an "extremely critical" condition.

The Post reported that students who climbed the tower and took photos described it as a "rite of passage" at the school.

The fall knocked her unconscious and when paramedics arrived, they struggled to her out because the staircase was too narrow for them to maneuver the stretcher she was on.

People began posting on her Facebook page on Sunday, mourning the loss and offering their condolences to her family, who flew in from Portland, Ore. "I don't think they went up there with the intent thinking that it would be possible to fall".

Fordham Public Safety is still investigating how Monfries and her friends were able to get inside. "They were like, 'We're seniors, let's go!'" he said.

Monfries has captured the earlier portion of her trip up the bell tower in a Snapchat video. My roommate was with them.

Fire Department sources confirmed that Monfries suffered serious injuries to her head and pelvis.

According to the university, the student climbed the clock tower with some friends.

Monfries was set to graduate with a degree in journalism next month.

"There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise - and mere weeks from graduation".

University president Joseph M McShane told NBC New York Ms Monfries would be awarded her degree posthumously.
