Walton is new Sacramento Kings coach after leaving Lakers

Walton will be introduced at a press conference later Monday.

"I have known Luke for many years and I am so excited to welcome him and his family to the Sacramento Kings", Kings general manager Vlade Divac said. "This year was a good season but I think we could do more, especially after All-Star break". Meanwhile, Walton's name has been brought up in regards to the Sacramento Kings, who recently fired head coach Dave Joerger despite finishing with a record of 39-43, their best in 13 seasons. He then served a season as associate head coach for the Thunder and spent a couple of years in the Spurs' front office before joining the 76ers in 2018-19.

Walton also served as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors from 2014-2016. The other coach who is reportedly in the mix is former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue.

The Kings have a strong young core.

Walton, whose departure from the Lakers was announced on Friday, was rapidly identified by Sacramento as their preferred successor to Dave Joerger, who was sacked last Thursday.

Despite all of the injuries and Anthony Davis trade rumors, Walton was ultimately held responsible for them missing the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season.

"After evaluating the season, I determined that we need to move in a different direction in order to take us to the next level", Divac said in a statement. "Uptempo and moving the ball and communication and defined roles and, obviously, believing in the team".

Walton is the 18th coach for the Kings since the franchise relocated to Sacramento prior to the 1985-86 season.
