Martin Truex Jr. wins at Richmond Raceway

Truex had led since the race went back to green on lap 136 following a caution.

"We just didn't have enough time", said Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 FedEx Toyota Camry.

"I always looking forward to Richmond", Busch said in a media release. "It is certainly the home track for me but it's just exciting because I know that I could very well have a great weekend ahead of us, really focus a lot of my efforts on how can we go out there and dominate the race, not just win, but dominate".

Truex gave Joe Gibbs Racing its sixth victory in nine races this season and won for the first time in his career on tracks shorter than a mile.

Truex led a race-high 186 laps (of 400) on the way to his 20th career-series win and 18th victory in a Toyota Camry. A trip to victory lane on Saturday would be his 3rd straight after sweeping the 2018 Richmond races, and it would bump him up to tie for the second-most win with Bobby Allison.

XFINITY: In Richmond, Virgina, Cole Custer was openly hoping for rain to shorten the NASCAR Xfinity race at Richmond Raceway.

On larger tracks where drafting has been possible with the new aero package this season, teams had been waiting until the last possible moment to attempt qualifying runs, producing qualifying rounds of several minutes of no on-track action. The top-five was rounded out by Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick, and Chesterfield, Va. native Denny Hamlin, who tonight made his 400th Monster Energy Series start in a Toyota. He was never able to make back up front to challenge for the lead.

"Sometimes in pro sports, you know, you get on a roll, things go well", Gibbs said.

And the inspection heavily impacted the starting grid with eight of the 37 cars failing inspection at least once.

Five other teams failed inspection and had their qualifying speeds and pit selections disallowed. They include the cars of local favorite Denny Hamlin, a three-time victor on the 0.75-mile oval, Chase Elliott and Matt Tifft.

Martin Truex Jr., Chase Elliott, Austin Dillon, Daniel Suarez and Jimmie Johnson completed the first 10 qualifiers.

No racing next week for the Easter break. "We've had decent speed". We lost the lead there on a pit stop. Busch has finished in the top 10 in each of his last 10 races. The top four finishers in this race will be eligible for the bonus when the series races next at Talladega Superspeedway in two weeks.
