Large Fire Breaks Out At Notre Dame Cathedral In Paris

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, the BBC reported.

Reactions from around the world came swiftly. A thought for all Catholics and for all French.

The Catholic church is a world-famous landmark for the French capital, second only perhaps to the Eiffel Tower, and draws about 13 million visitors per year. He suggested that France should get some "flying water tankers" to put out the blaze. Ongoing renovation work has left part of the building surrounded by scaffolding, and France Info says firefighters believe the fire is "potentially linked" to the renovation work.

Donald Trump has also taken the time to weigh in via Twitter.

A major operation was under way, the fire department said, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.

The Vatican "learned with shock and sadness the news of the bad fire which has devastated the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, a symbol of Christianity in France and the world", Vatican spokesman Alessandro Gisotti said in a statement.

Speaking to BFMTV, Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire said first responders now trying to salvage the art and other priceless pieces stored in the cathedral.

"Notre-Dame is engulfed with flames".

Emergency services are responding to the fire.

"Last year, we launched information panels with links to third-party sources like Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia for subjects subject to misinformation", a YouTube spokesman said in a statement.

"Happy and unfortunate events for centuries have been marked by the bells of Notre Dame".

Pastor Miguel Castellanos said in a post on the Montreal church's Facebook page that he's in shock over the news of the fire at Notre Dame de Paris, which he described as a jewel of architecture and an exceptional cultural, historical and religious symbol. Castellanos offered prayers to the French people and all those affected by the fire. To cover the rest, Picaud helped launch the Friends of Notre-Dame of Paris Foundation.

According to French newspaper Le Monde, the fire broke out in the attic of the historic monument before spreading to engulf a large section of the roof.

The peak of the 12th century cathedral is undergoing a 6 million-euro ($6.8 million) renovation project.
