Social media was awash with pictures and videos of activists blocking the streets of Oxford Circus, Waterloo Bridge, Marble Arch, and Parliament Square with banners and sculptures, including a massive pink boat sporting the words: "Tell the Truth".

Thousands of people are expected to take the streets of London on Monday, blocking traffic and disrupting "business as usual" in the capital to demand action over the escalating ecological crisis.

Today the Extinction Rebellion movement took their protests to London and across the world.

The group Extinction Rebellion is trying to block five central London locations Monday to demand the British government declare a climate emergency.

A TfL spokesman said: "The safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority and we're working closely with the police to manage the impact on London's transport network".

"They can change a few of the laws along with the Paris agreement so that we can really work towards achieving a practical target".

Speaking at a meditation on the eve of the protests, Dr Williams said humans had declared war on nature.

He said: "People are frustrated and angry but if we don't stop climate change there will be a complete breakdown of society".

Organisers said: "The worldwide rebellion begins and Extinction Rebellion will be bringing London to a standstill for up to two weeks".

Demonstrators arrived at London's Hyde Park on Sunday, some having journeyed to the city on foot in recent weeks from various parts of the United Kingdom for what is described as an "International Rebellion".

Activists gathered at Hyde Park yesterday and were encouraged to camp there overnight before a march towards Piccadilly Circus today. No arrests have been made.

The Met said it had "appropriate policing plans" in place for the demonstrations and officers from across the force would be used "to support the public order operation".

Police have advised Londoners to leave extra time for their journeys because of possible delays caused by the protest.
