Celtics beat Pacers 84-74: 5 Takeaways from Boston's Game 1 win

The Boston Celtics held the visiting Indiana Pacers without a field goal for the first 8 1/2 minutes of the second half Sunday afternoon, rallying from a halftime deficit for an 84-74 victory in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. That the Celtics were able to only underscores how abominable the Pacers were in the second half, particularly in the third quarter.

"Those guys guarded their butts off", Stevens said.

When Bogdanovic was asked about the incident following Indiana's practice on Monday (Brad Stevens and the Celtics took the day off), he downplayed the incident as nothing more than what typically happens in the heat of a playoff battle. Perhaps it was Indiana's defense, which - especially when Young was on the court - lived up to its reputation as one of the league's best units.

The Celtics have been at their best this season when they are forcing turnovers, spacing the floor and knocking down outside shots. Since the All-Star break, IN is 10-15 - the worst record of any playoff team IN either conference. While it's just one game, the Boston Celtics seem to be playing with that pep in their step again, and they're one of the scariest teams in the league when playing to their full potential.

"We just had to turn that page", he said. "We have to make our adjustments, come out of this game, and be ready to take him out next game".

In total, IN scored just 29 combined IN the third and fourth quarters, and though the defense was able to hold the Celtics IN check, it wasn't enough to overcome the prolonged offensive draught IN the second half. Just the focus level on the game plan really comes to the ultimate level and we depend on each other that much more. If you look at the shots we missed, they were good shots. They have incredible defenders on their team.

Smart could very well be out for the duration of Boston's playoff run unless they make it all the way to the NBA Finals.

"I just try to be aggressive on the ball, be in the right spots", Irving said. Getting all those jitters out for the first game, I'm always happy just to get the feel-out game out of the way.

Stevens said he could tell Morris was probably going to have a good game, based on the team's two most recent practices.

I keep looking back at the March 25 meeting between these two teams (Note: This was after the Pacers lost Victor Oladipo for the season, so similar lineups to what we'll see in this series), when the Celtics won 114-112 but didn't cover as seven-point home favorites.
