Indian squad to be announced today

KL Rahul will be kept as the reserve opener, as per Prasad.

Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Lokesh Rahul, Vijay Shankar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami.

Moments after India's World Cup squad was announced on Monday, a question reigned supreme on everyone's mind - why no Rishabh Pant? Pant, who made a late claim for his inclusion in the squad, missed out after Dinesh Karthik was chosen as the backup keeper while Ambati Rayudu, who was a regular in the ODI squad until previous year also did not make it to the squad.

Dinesh Karthik, 33, was given the second wicketkeeper's slot over rising 21-year-old star Rishabh Pant.

"That is the only reason why we went ahead with DK otherwise Pant was nearly there", he added.

Amidst the speculations for the No. 4 spot, Ambati Rayudu - who is not being in good form - is missing out of the team.

"We are more or less sorted", Kohli said. The debate for the number four was shut down finally with Ambati Rayudu being dropped for being inconsistent despite getting enough chances. Shikhar Dhawan will open the innings with Rohit while Ravindra Jadeja can come into the equation during the latter stages of the tournament.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be the back-up pacer and Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami are expected to start in all the big games, fitness permitting. We also have Dinesh Karthik and Kedar Jadhav.

With Hardik Pandya and Shankar to perform the duties of a combined fourth pacer, there was no place for an additional specialist speedster in the line-up.

However, Prasad said that Navdeep Saini and Khaleel Ahmed's names were discussed. The national team will leave for London on April 23 to play one-off T20I and five ODIs against England ahead of the World Cup.
