Julian Assange: Sweden considers reviving rape inquiry

"And if he's not innocent then of course the Swedish justice system is generally seen as quite fair - he won't be mistreated as we suspect he will be at a United States super-max jail".

Police arrested the WikiLeaks founder Thursday at the Ecuadorian embassy in London after Ecuador withdrew his asylum. Mr Assange spent nearly seven years in the embassy in London where he sought political asylum in 2012 when he failed in his legal battle against extradition to Sweden.

He sought refuge in the Knightsbridge embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden on sexual assault charges.

Prosecutors said they were looking again at the case after a request by the lawyer of the alleged victim.

The WikiLeaks founder is an Australia native, and the government said he would receive consular help due to its citizens after he was arrested on a us conspiracy charge.

The letter, from mainly Labour MPS and Peers, appears to mark a growing division within the party over its attitude to Assange, coming after Jeremy Corbyn and Diane Abbott criticised any moves to extradite him to the US.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous, says USA authorities have already sent Britain a provisional arrest warrant regarding Assange's extradition.

Extradition lawyer Ben Keith said the court will not assess the evidence against Assange in an effort to determine his guilt or innocence, but will scrutinise whether the offence he is accused of in the USA would be a crime in Britain.

It follows confirmation from the Crown Prosecution Service that in the event of competing extradition requests for the same person, it falls to the home secretary to decide which one goes first.

Britain is bound by law not to extradite a suspect to a country where he or she could face execution for the crime, but this is not an issue at the moment because the crime Assange faces does not put him at risk of capital punishment, he said.

Relations with his Ecuadoran hosts gradually soured and new pro-US President Lenin Moreno on Thursday pulled his asylum and permitted British police to remove Assange. She said a request by Swedish authorities, however, shouldn't be ignored.

The letter, signed by mostly Labour MPs, urges Mr Javid to "stand with the victims of sexual violence" and ensure the rape claim against the 47-year-old can be "properly investigated".

After his dramatic arrest, Assange was taken to Westminster Magistrates' Court and found guilty of a British charge of breaching bail.

The UN has called for his right to a fair trial to be respected during any extradition process.

Assange denies the Swedish allegations, which have a limitation period that expires in August 2020.

"He's obviously going to fight extradition and fight it hard", Robinson told BBC radio on Friday, adding she had visited her client in a court cell after the hearing when he thanked supporters and said: "I told you so".
