Assange to Get No 'Special Treatment' From Canberra - Australian PM

"It doesn't matter what particular crime it is that they're alleged to have committed, that's the way the system works", Morrison said. "He will be getting the same treatment that any other Australian would get in circumstances", Morrison said.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said any extradition plans had "nothing to do with Australia", and that Assange would receive only standard assistance from Australian consular officials.

Australian-born WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has been arrested by United Kingdom police after spending years in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, will receive no more support from Australian authorities than any other Australian national would in this situation, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Friday.

Also on Friday, Assange's mother, Christine Assange, took to Twitter to call for police and prison and court staff to be gentle with her son.

Sweden later dropped its investigation, but Assange remained at the embassy over fears Britain might extradite him to the United States in connection with WikiLeaks' publication of classified US government documents. On Thursday, US law enforcement issued an extradition request in relation to Assange's activities with former US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, who was convicted in 2013 of leaking state secrets to WikiLeaks.

Sweden is reportedly considering re-opening the sexual assault charges.

Mr Assange refused to leave the embassy, fearing arrest and extradition to the USA for releasing classified military and diplomatic documents through his investigative journalism operation, WikiLeaks.

Ecuador's recent attempts to stake out a comparatively independent foreign policy, something of which the Assange asylum move was a product, made them a lot of enemies, particularly in the US. But on Thursday, Ecuador revoked his political asylum, with President Lenín Moreno claiming that the country's patience had "reached its limit".
