Syracuse G Frank Howard suspended indefinitely

The Syracuse Orange's first-round assignment of facing No. 9-seed Baylor Bears was already going to be hard, but now No. 8-seed Syracuse will have to manage Thursday without one of its starting guards.

Syracuse is hoping to replicate recent NCAA Tournament runs that saw the Orange advance to the Final Four in 2016 and the Sweet 16 a year ago.

The Orange play Baylor in Salt Lake City on Thursday. A first-round exit would look much worse for Syracuse than Baylor. When it works, the Bears can be lethal from the outside with capable spot-up shooters in Mason, Butler, King McClure, Mario Kegler and others.

Syracuse senior point guard Frank Howard has been suspended indefinitely because he failed a drug test before the NCAA Tournament, three people familiar with the situation told The Daily Orange on Wednesday night. Syracuse lost four of their last five games in the regular season. Based on what Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett said on Wednesday during media availability, the SU players had learned of the news recently. Syracuse shoots 42 percent from the floor, 33 percent from 3-point range and 68 percent from the free throw line. This time, he'll be tasked with navigating Syracuse's zone. The Bears' star point guard averaged 14.6 points and 3.3 assists this season.

Now it will be Battle, set to return Thursday, who will most likely step in for Howard at point guard. Their offensive rebounding can only carry them so far. Everybody - it is very similar to last week when we found out Tyus wouldn't play.
