'Welcome to SA': 9 key quotes from Gordhan's load-shedding briefing

South Africa is now in Stage 4 load shedding due to a shortage in capacity which could potentially last until Wednesday.

Eskom highlighted that load-shedding was an emergency measure to prevent the power system from collapsing completely.

"If more load needs to be shed than has been scheduled in Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 then National Control will instruct additional, unscheduled load shedding".

This will remain the case until public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan and Eskom provide feedback on the matter, which they say could take 10-14 days.

One transmission line that carries power from Cahora Bassa to South Africa gave out at about midnight on Friday and the other on Saturday morning.

Seven generating units are now out of the system due to boiler tube leaks. The operational issues at Eskom's plants were compounded over the weekend by a loss of power imports from neighbouring Mozambique, which was hit by a devastating cyclone.

A total of 7 power generation units are down due to these leaks the company's chief operations officer Jan Oberholzer said.

Ramaphosa's government has promised to inject 23 billion rand a year over the next three years to shore up Eskom's balance sheet, although there are signs that more money could be needed.

Mabuza stressed that given Eskom's ageing power plants - over half of them are older than 37 years - much more intensive maintenance of its plant was required in recent years.
