The leaders of the Western Hemisphere's two largest economies are pledging closer trade ties, as well as enhanced military cooperation.

President Trump - a harsh North Atlantic Treaty Organisation critic since his days on the campaign trail - floated the idea Tuesday that Brazil could become a member of the alliance as he met with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

"The facts around this trip are vital for the American media-and especially the American press covering the White House-to understand, so that they can report properly and question Bolsonaro during his trip to the White House about the realities of his presidency", said The Intercept's Glenn Greenwald, "rather than the branding and perception the Brazilian government is trying to sell around the world".

"For the first time in a while, a pro-America Brazilian president arrives in DC", he said in the tweet. Trump gave Bolsonaro a United States soccer team jersey as well.

President Bolsonaro planned to discuss "international themes in the region" at the visit to headquarters in Langley, Virginia, according to his son, Eduardo, a Brazilian lawmaker accompanying him.

Mr Bolsonaro will hold private talks in the Oval Office with Mr Trump before they appear at a joint press conference in the Rose Garden. 'It's the beginning of a partnership focused on liberty and prosperity, something that all of us Brazilians have long wished for'.

"Nowadays, you have a president who is a friend of the United States who admires this handsome country", he said.

Eduardo Bolsonaro described the CIA as 'one of the most respected intelligence agencies in the world, ' in a tweet that was likely to raise eyebrows back home in Brazil, where the US and its spy services have been regarded with suspicion in recent years.

The National Security Agency had been wiretapping Rousseff for years, making it that much easy to replace her with a compliant patsy - whose weakness Bolsonaro could then use as a springboard for his own reactionary candidacy.

"I still remember Pelé and others", President Trump mused, referencing the retired player hailed as one of the greatest ever to play the sport.

In his speech to the Chamber of Commerce, Bolsonaro made that comparison himself, describing how he has had to contend with "fake news" and tough coverage from established news organizations. Brazil is the second-largest economy in the Western Hemisphere, and the United States is Brazil's second-largest trading partner after China.

"I am supporting their efforts to join [the OECD]", Trump told reporters as he began a meeting with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Brazil is seeking US help with its efforts to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and to expand trade.

Venezuela is also expected to be a subject of discussion. Earlier in February, Guaido visited Brazil seeking support in his fight against legitimately-elected President Nicolas Maduro.

The two were slated to work toward creating a "north-south axis" between the USA and Brazil on economic issues as the two largest economies in the western hemisphere, the official said.
