Liverpool back atop Premier League with 2-1 win at Fulham

"We started really well, and did a lot of good things but lost the rhythm a bit".

Sadio Mane had given Liverpool the lead in the opening half-hour as he confidently slotted home from Roberto Firmino's reverse pass in to the box. "I think we made it pretty hard for ourselves with the goal we conceded obviously, but in the end we got the three points and that's what matters".

"We probably took more positives from past year than negatives but it's a bitter pill to swallow when you lose the final of the Champions League and the way we went down". A brilliant afternoon I have to say.

Liverpool is two points clear of City, which has a game in hand in what looks to be a two-team race for the title.

"I was sure we wouldn't panic and wouldn't show the nerves that you are all waiting for".

Klopp laughed off his midfielder's impact after coming on as sub, but made more reference to the mindset of his squad and why he was convinced Liverpool would still win.

"But years of practice goes into penalties and in the game you've just got to go back to what you've been practicing and be calm and know what you're going to do". Fulham have 17 points and a mountain to climb if they are to avoid nearly certain relegation from the top flight.

"I don't think we think about that too much at this moment in time but it is a memory that never goes away too quickly".

Mane has found the net at least once in seven of those matches and has five goals in his last four league appearances.

Defeat for sixth-placed Chelsea left them with 57 points from 30 matches, a point behind Manchester United above them and three points behind Arsenal in fourth.

Liverpool rounded off a fine week with the victory, having beaten Burnley 4-2 last Sunday and then Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16 before being drawn with Porto in the quarter-final.

It was his 17th Premier League goal, putting Mane level with Salah and only one behind Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.
