Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said: "Australians stand with all New Zealanders today during this dark time where hate and violence have stolen their peace and innocence".

All mosques in New Zealand had been asked to shut their doors and armed guards posted at them, police said, adding they were not actively looking for any other "identified suspects".

So far, it has been confirmed that 49 people have lost their lives in the attack, which took place at two mosques in Christchurch during Friday prayers. A police presence has been placed at mosques around the country and ramped up throughout Christchurch.

The prime minister of New Zealand has labelled the attack on two mosques in Christchurch as terrorist attacks. Nichols said he saw two wounded people being carried out on stretchers past his automotive shop.

It's also requesting extra police patrols at their mosque in Old Irving Park, their education center in Morton Grove, and their campus in Skokie. "It must have been an automatic - no one could pull a trigger that quick", the man, who did not wish to be named, told AFP.

Dr Hartley said that New Zealand "gives room for diversity, and prides itself on that: it prides itself on being a place where people can be welcomed".

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said bigotry in Western countries contributed to the attacks on Muslims in New Zealand.

"I have been calling my friends but there are many I haven't heard from".

Christchurch is home to almost 400,000 people and is sometimes called the Garden City.

In 2010 and 2011 the city suffered a series of devastating earthquakes, with the most destructive at 6.3 magnitude, which killed almost 200 people and destroyed thousands of buildings.
