Rep. Adam Schiff: ‘It’s a mistake’ for Mueller not to subpoena Trump

Rep. Adam Schiff: ‘It’s a mistake’ for Mueller not to subpoena Trump

Cohen pleaded guilty to eight felony counts last year and will begin a three-year prison term in May.

"It's very hard to make the argument that the person who was directed and was coordinated should go to jail but the person who did the directing and did the coordinating should not", Schiff said at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast.

'It's very hard to make the argument that the person who was directed and was coordinated should go to jail, but the person who did the directing and did the coordinating should not.

Trump and the White House also argue that Cohen's track record of lying means he can't be believed - that he'll say anything to save his image and try to get a lighter punishment for other crimes he's admitted to. "That, however, does not let the Justice Department off the hook".

Adam Schiff says evidence gathered in the Stormy Daniels scandal "militates very strongly in favor" of indicting President Trump after he leaves office. "I think the Constitution is worth it, and I don't place my word in a person who happens to be causing harm to society", Representative Al Green, a Texas Democrat, said, using the speaker's characterization to counter her position. "The public gets to see this report". "In its absence, impeachment becomes a partisan exercise in failure".

Democrats have been careful not to close the door entirely, however.

Schiff said his committee is particularly interested in whether Russian Federation was laundering money for the Trump Organization, leading to Trump being compromised.

Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani has said he wouldn't let the president be interviewed by Mueller because the special counsel would set a perjury trap.

"Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there's something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don't think we should go down that path, because it divides the country", Pelosi said.

"Well, if there's insufficient evidence in the Mueller report and we're not able to produce sufficient evidence in our own investigation, that ends the inquiry", Schiff explained. "A lot will be impacted.by the degree to which the Justice Department makes us investigate everything Bob Mueller did all over again. that will have the most direct impact on the length of our investigation. We can bring Mueller in to testify and we take it to court if necessary".
