Mumbai Police issues traffic advisory after foot overbridge collapses near CST station

A pedestrian bridge connecting a train station with a road collapsed in Mumbai on Thursday, killing at least five people and injuring more than 30, police said.

The foot over bridge on Mumbai Municipal Corporation side collapsed about 07:45 pm today. "Four of those taken to hospitals have succumbed to their injuries", Tanaji Kamble, a spokesman for the local civic authority's disaster management cell, told AFP news agency.

Mumbai: Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta on day suspended two civic engineers in connection with Thursday's foot overbridge collapse which claimed six lives.

On Friday morning, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met the victims, who were left injured by the collapse of a foot over bridge outside CSMT, at GT hospital.

The traffic on the busy route has been affected and commuters have been advised to use alternate routes.

Prabhu and Tambe were the staff of the G T Hospital.

Part of a 40-year-old Gokhale bridge at the Andheri station collapsed amid heavy rain on 3 July 2018 last year and five people were injured.

"I have ordered a high-level inquiry into this unfortunate incident which puts a question mark over the authenticity of the structural audit of bridges carried out across the city", he added.

The accident comes nearly two years after at least 22 people died after a stampede broke out on a crowded pedestrian bridge connecting two railway stations in central Mumbai in 2017. "In 2016, under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the northern end of the bridge was taken up for beautification but not repairs". "He should be arrested right now".

Tawde meanwhile said an enquiry into the collapse would be conducted by the Railways and the BMC. However, the BMC did not act on the report.

Congress leader Milind Deora said murder charge should be slapped on auditors who inspected the bridge and the BMC officers who appointed them. "This is failure of the government and the system", he added.

"During that audit, 354 bridges were checked for their structural soundness".
