Robert Lewandowski hammers Bayern Munich's tactics in loss to Liverpool

The result ended a run of five successive Champions League defeats - including the final last May - away from Anfield and maintained Klopp's record of never having lost any of the nine two-legged European ties he has overseen as Liverpool manager in Europe.

"I had a lot of duels, not just with the one player, and it was very hard because I was alone sometimes, and I didn't have help also and I couldn't do some things".

"If you are alone against two or three good players it is very hard to play".

Bayern was playing without the injured Arjen Robben and the suspended pair of Thomas Mueller and Joshua Kimmich. They know it is a very tough place to come.

Van Dijk oozes confidence on the ball, he organises his defence and those in front of him, and opponents are so concerned by his ability on the ball that they leave space for other Liverpool players by spending so much energy attempting to starve the former Celtic defender of possession.

Nothing, however, helped provide the goals. Maybe we were trying to play defensive and trying to score goals and maybe that was wrong and today Liverpool were better.

James Milner says Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane "is on fire" and has urged him to continue his goal-scoring exploits until the end of the season.

Virgil van Dijk made it 2-1 21 minutes from time and Mane wrapped things up late on, giving Liverpool a deserved away win at the Allianz Arena. But if they do go all the way in the Champions League, nobody will be more important to them than Van Dijk. Premier League clubs knocked out three Bundesliga clubs in the last sixteen, Liverpool beat Bayern, Manchester City eased past Schalke and Tottenham knocked out Borussia Dortmund. The club is reportedly interested in 23-year-old Lille forward Nicolas Pepe, who has 17 goals in the French league this season, while Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi and Atletico Madrid's Lucas Hernandez remain targets.

More new signings are expected, but the new arrivals will have little time to adjust to get Bayern back to where it wants to be.
