Manafort Sentenced to Additional Jail Time

Paul Manafort, who has already been sentenced to prison time in two separate cases, has been indicted on additional criminal charges in NY.

Paul Manafort has been charged in a new criminal case not even an hour after learning his prison sentence for federal crimes. "I would be surprised if she really threw the book at him".

"I can say to you with confidence that my behavior will be very different", Manafort told the judge.

Manafort pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in the Washington, D.C., case in order to avoid a trial previous year.

Jackson said Manafort could serve some of the prison sentence at the same time he was serving in prison for his other case. At last week's sentencing, Manafort wore a green prison jumpsuit emblazoned with the words "Alexandria Inmate" on the back.

"Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani also said prosecutors "should be ashamed of their horrendous treatment of Paul Manafort" following the sentencing last week".

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson sentenced Manafort to almost three-and-a-half years in prison on charges that he misled the U.S. government about his foreign lobbying work and encouraged witnesses to lie on his behalf.

Manafort, who will serve just over 90 months in prison, apologised for his actions and asked for leniency during his sentencing hearing.

Defence lawyer Kevin Downing suggested Manafort was being unduly punished because of the "media frenzy" generated by the appointment of a special counsel.

The case against Manafort in Washington focused more on his Ukraine work and election-year contacts with a longtime Russian aide.

"I will be 70 years old in a few weeks".

The Mueller team has prosecuted Manafort in both jurisdictions for charges related to his foreign consulting work.

Manafort, a lifelong political operator whose clients have included dictators Ferdinand Marcos and Mobutu Sese Seko, said he has learned his lesson.

She took an apparent shot at Ellis, who had said Manafort had lived an "otherwise blameless life".

Jackson also harshly criticized Manafort for years of deception that extended even into her own courtroom and the grand jury.

"The defendant is not public enemy number one", she said.

Manafort had "to make a choice", the prosecutor said.

Manafort is one of several high-profile individuals in Trump's orbit who have now been ensnared by Mueller's investigation.

"The criminal conduct in this case was not an isolated, single incident", Jackson said. Thirty months of that sentence will run concurrently with the sentence handed down in the Virginia case. Gates later pleaded guilty to conspiracy and lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Wednesday's sentencing comes in a week of activity for the investigation. On Wednesday, she indicated that she would give Manafort some credit for accepting responsibility for his crimes by virtue of having pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy last September. Manafort joined the Trump campaign in March 2016 and left in late August of that year amid reports about his payments for his political work in Ukraine.

This is a breaking news and developing story.
