Harry Potter Mobile Game Looks Very Pokemon GO

Harry Potter Mobile Game Looks Very Pokemon GO

I'm referring to the launch of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the highly anticipated AR game that will basically be Pokemon GO, but Harry Potter. But whether this makes Wizards Unite the kind of game you open up every time you walk somewhere-to the point that you walk more so you can play-remains to be seen.

Archit Bhargava, Head of Product Marketing at Niantic, admitted at a Harry Potter: Wizards Unite event that the phenomenal success of Pokemon Go right from the beginning wasn't entirely expected by the Niantic team. The Calamity has caused artifacts, creatures, people, and even memories to appear in the Muggle world mysteriously. As a player, you are a new recruit of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force charged with investigating what's going on and reporting back to the Ministry of Magic.

Sign ups are available now on the Google Play store, although wizards and witches on iOS will have to wait a little longer.

Spells will cost Spell Energy which will need to be replenished at Inns found around the globe, which sounds a lot like PokeStops in Pokemon Go.

An updated website for Wizards Unite also says you'll be able to choose a wizarding profession to enhance your skillset.

Niantic's early tease of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite didn't come with an official release date, though TechCrunch is reporting that the company is promising "sometime in 2019" and that "before summer" would be a good guess. It's up to you to ready your wand, prepare your potions, brush up your spells and help prevent The Calamity from exposing the secrets of the wizarding world. These ingredients can be found on the Map, varying by the environment, weather, and time of day, as well as in specially designated Greenhouses. "Combat skills will be tested when witches and wizards visit real-world locations called Fortresses, key areas that play host to Wizarding Challenges". There will also be Portkeys, which you reach by unlocking Portmanteaus, to get a look into iconic Harry Potter locations.

In that sense, it's preparing itself to be a game with more appeal for players who want something more, but it does leave us wondering whether it will hit the highs that Pokemon Go enjoyed. You'll be able to interact with those characters and using AR, view them in the real world in full 360-degree glory.
