Captain Marvel Saves The Box Office With Global Gross Of $455 Million

As expected, the latest from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) - Captain Marvel - went straight to number one at the U.S. box office.

"Captain Marvel" also cemented itself in the history books, and was the fifth highest global opening weekend of all time, and the second highest for a superhero movie.

Captain Marvel's box office performance went higher, further, faster than even its sky-high industry tracking estimates.

Larson noted last month how movies that are landmarks for representation, like "Captain Marvel", often come with the weight of huge expectations, with a lot riding on their successes or failures.

"Thankfully Captain Marvel's superpowers extend to the box office realm and as expected provided a much-needed box office boost that the 2019 box office has been waiting for with a positively out of this world debut", Comscore's senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian says. The last big hit was Warner Bros.'s "Aquaman" in late December, which opened with $68 million USA and went on to gross $1.14 billion US worldwide. I think you see that in their box office.

The North Jersey Record reports theatre patrons at the AMC Theatre initially didn't seem to notice Larson, who was dressed in a Captain Marvel sweatsuit.

Is Captain Marvel destined to be a film in which objectivity is benched in favor of stance-taking? While this is confusing at first, with one barely getting a chance to get one's head around the "Supreme Intelligence" that commands Kree or the code of honour and complete subservience that it demands of its soldiers, the film settles into a nice groove when - after some eye-blinding inter-galactic collisions - Vers finds herself on "C-53". It is also the best IMAX March opening globally and delivered the second-best IMAX Marvel opening globally behind last year's Avengers: Infinity War.
