Osaka in shock split with tennis coach

Osaka in shock split with tennis coach

The announcement came shortly after the Japanese claimed the Australian Open title, which helped her become the first Asian player to be the world's number one, putting an end to Simona Halep's 48-week reign atop the WTA rankings.

"Hey everyone, I will no longer be working together with Sascha", Osaka posted on Twitter on Monday.

World No. 1 Naomi Osaka has called time on her 13-month relationship with coach Sascha Bajin, once the former hitting partner of great Serena Williams, despite their partnership yielding success in the last two Grand Slams.

Bajin won't take long to attract new suitors - he has previously worked with Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki.

"Thanks to my team, I don't think I would have made it through this week without you", she said after her Australian Open triumph. At the Australian Open, the then 20-year-old reached the fourth round after defeating two top twenty players in Elena Vesnina and Australia's Ash Barty.

Based in the United States, Osaka linked up with Bajin in late 2017 and enjoyed a breakthrough year, shooting from 72 in the world to the top of the women's rankings.

Osaka, who withdrew from this week's Qatar Open citing a back injury, beat Petra Kvitova in three sets in the Australian Open final on January 26.

Bajin responded to Osaka and thanked her "for letting me be a part of this".
