Texas Authorities Find Malnourished Children Locked In Dog Cage

Deputies on Tuesday discovered two malnourished children crammed into a locked dog cage and two more smeared with feces and urine in a barn in North Texas, in what a sheriff described as the worst case of child abuse he has ever seen.

Deputies in Rhome were called to the scene Tuesday morning after a report of domestic violence.

Upon searching the property, deputies found the two children inside the dog kennel, along with two other children that were also showing signs of malnourishment.

A sheriff says four malnourished children were found in a barn outside a rural North Texas home, just feet away from plentiful food kept under lock-and-key.

The three boys and one girl ranged in age from 1 to 5, and didn't say much when police arrived at the home near Rhome, authorities said.

Akin did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press, but he told The Dallas Morning News it's the worst case of child abuse he has seen in his 44 years in law enforcement.

A North Texas couple is jailed without bond after four malnourished children were found in deplorable conditions at their rural home. Two were locked in 3-by-3-foot (90-by-90 centimeter) cages, while two younger children were found outside the cage but only partially clothed and smeared with feces and urine.

Wise County Emergency Medical Services personnel transported all of the children to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth for evaluation.

The man was also taken to the hospital for treatment for the wounds he had sustained to his face.

The woman is the mother of all four children and the man is father of one of them, Akin told the newspaper. The rooms that held the children were "specially constructed" with no access to toilets, water, or lighting, officials said. "This is the kind of thing that happens somewhere else, not here". The children were adopted by Cheatham and her estranged husband, the sheriff's department said. They were arrested and each charged with four counts of child endangerment.
