Newborn baby found in middle of road with umbilical cord still attached

A newspaper carrier found a newborn baby in the middle of a road early Monday morning, according to authorities.

A witness said he had encountered a woman with a baby just minutes before the infant was found who had begged him to take the child, U.S. outlet ABC News reported.

'The man directed her to the fire station and the Valley Children's Hospital down the street and suggested she take the baby there'.

The newspaper carrier found the girl a short time later.

Initially, he thought it was some kind of animal before realising it was a baby girl. It was lying on its back, covered in its own feces, which had leaked through its onesie, he said.

'It was just an very bad situation seeing the baby right there. "The baby was squirming".

Aurelio Fuentes Jr. told the paper that he didn't know what he was seeing at first. Fuentes reportedly brought the baby inside and unzipped the onesie to warm her, and noticed the umbilical cord.

Another woman drove up and saw Fuentes holding the child.

A witness told her to take the baby to the hospital before leaving the scene. She is said to be in good condition.

A woman in another auto told him to bring the girl into her vehicle, which was warm inside.

He did not finish delivering his newspapers.

Pogue said the situation was inexplicable and also noted that any newborn infants can be safely surrendered at any designated "safe surrender site" - a fire station or hospital - without any questions asked or the mother facing any charges.

The surrendered babies are given medical treatment if needed, then placed in a foster or pre-adoptive home.

Madera County sheriff's deputies are looking for a small, blue or gray SUV in the search for the woman who abandoned a baby on a dark roadway in Madera Ranchos.
