President Hassan Rohani blasted a USA "conspiracy" against Iran as the country marked the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution that ended the monarchy and heralded the start of four decades of clerical rule.

In Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) is the branch of the military responsible for upholding the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

'The long-suffering Iranian people deserve a much brighter future, ' he added.

Iranians burn flags of the United States during commemorations of the 40th anniversary of Islamic Revolution in the capital Tehran on February 11, 2019.

At a rally in Tehran, president Hassan Rouhani addressed the crowds for almost 45 minutes, lashing out at Iran's enemies - America and Israel - and claiming their efforts to "bring down" Iranians through sanctions will not succeed.

The celebrations included several instance of muscle flexing, including the launch and test of new missiles, which would put Israel squarely within precise range of the Iranian armed forces.

Following reports of a second failed space launch by Iran in less than a month, the U.S. State Department last week called for "tougher global restrictions to deter Iran's missile program".

Along with the chants "Death to America" and banners bearing slogans calling for "Death to Israel", Monday's marches were also a backdrop to the military's display of Iranian-made missiles, which authorities showcase every year during anniversary celebrations.

This year's anniversary comes as tensions rise with the United States and Iran grapples with the aftermath of President Donald Trump's pullout last May from the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers and tough USA economic sanctions, re-imposed in November.

In January, President Hassan Rouhani said his country was experiencing its worst economic crisis since the overthrow of the Shah.

"The United States does not have the courage to shoot a single bullet at us despite all its defensive and military assets".

Iranian political and military officials have also attended the rallies along with other people to rejoice at the auspicious ceremony. "But if they attack us, we will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground", Javani was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA, according to Reuters.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Iran that this year could be the last time it celebrates the anniversary if it attacks his country.

"If this regime makes the mistake of threatening us and tries to destroy Tel Aviv or Haifa, they won't succeed, and it will be the last anniversary of the revolution that they celebrate".

"They should take that into account", he said.

Mustafa Rajabi, 38, told The Times of his passion for the Islamic Revolution.
