Grammys 2019: They wore that? Fashions and photos from the red carpet

Grammy organizers this year expanded the top four categories - album, record, song of the year, and best new artist - to eight nominees from five in a bid to diversify the contest.

"This is going to be a special Grammys".

"I can't believe we just won Best Original Music @BAFTA 's. Thank u to all our fans we love u so much, we wouldn't be here without u", Gaga tweeted. "I relax more ... when I know that I am supported by other women ... and I feel like I can do anything".

The music world will hit the red carpet on Sunday for the Grammys, with a wider selection of nominees - led by hip-hop royalty and a bevy of talented women - up for the top prizes.

The televised bash in Los Angeles, which kicks off at 5:00 pm at the Staples Centre, is not without controversy, as the Recording Academy grapples with how to embrace diversity in its ranks. Cardi B, Kacey Musgraves, Brandi Carlile and H.E.R. also in contention.

The main performers for this year includes Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Dua Lipa, St. Vincent, Chloe x Halle and Travis Scott.

"What I plan to do is let every woman who is nominated, who is here this weekend, know that from the red carpet to the stage, win or lose, I have your back. I feel like we are truly part of a celebration, bringing the light, bringing the energy and continuing to make the statement that music is such an important part of all of our lives", she said in a press preview on February 7, according to Rolling Stone.

"This is just the beginning of moving to a more inclusive future", Monae said.

When asked soon after the show about the lack of female winners, academy president Neil Portnow said women needed to "step up" - now-infamous words that instantly drew outrage, and which he said were taken out of context.

Ariana Grande also won her first Grammy in the same week that she publicly blasted Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich and accused him of lying about why she was no longer performing at the show.

Ehrlich told the AP that Grande "felt it was too late for her to pull something together".

Gaga, who is to perform later on Sunday, said on Twitter she was "in tears with honor and gratitude".

The Grammy Premiere Ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. PT, with host Shaggy leading the festivities, and presenters like Questlove handing out the first Grammy Awards.

"I've got nothing to say, I'm speechless", she said.

Grande is nominated for two awards and could miss the chance of giving a speech onstage if she wins. Taylor Swift, who was snubbed and scored one nomination, also won't be at the show. There will also be a tribute to the late Aretha Franklin, who died last August.
