39 die, dozens sick in India from drinking spurious liquor

Reports say the incident which left several others lying in the hospital after falling sick happened when they drank illegally-brewed liquor containing toxic methanol.

Roorkee (Uttarakhand) [India], Feb 10 (ANI): Death toll due to consumption of illicit liquor in Roorkee touched 32 on Saturday.

As death toll mounted in two northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, police have launched a massive crackdown on the illegal dens of spurious liquor manufacturing places, officials said Sunday.

The deaths occurred in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

"We can't give you the exact death toll as post-mortems are awaited in many cases", a senior official in Uttar Pradesh told Xinhua.

Twenty-two people were admitted to hospitals in Saharanpur but were in stable condition, Pandey said. They have seized hundreds of liters of so-called country-made liquor.

The Saharanpur police, who are working on the assumption that the alcohol may have come from the same source, arrested 30 people, many of them bootleggers.

They vowed to take strict action against the accused, saying they would demand death penalty for those involved in the illicit trade once the case reaches court.

Later Saturday, authorities in both states announced compensation of $2,800 each to the relatives of those killed.

Authorities suspect bootleggers mixed the alcohol with methanol - a cheap but toxic form of alcohol - to increase the liquor's potency and their profit.

Bootleg liquor operations flourish in rural India, where many people can't afford to buy alcohol from state-approved shops.
