U.S. border agency: Man shot by officer in critical condition

According to CBP, the pickup crossed a few yards into Mexico before it struck a concrete barrier.

CBP officers assigned to the Office of Field Operations (OFO) at the Pharr International Bridge came upon a tractor-trailer hauling a commercial shipment of fresh produce consisting of fresh bell peppers crossing into the USA from Mexico.

He is also giving an ultimatum to the federal government - remove the wire or there will be lawsuit, The Associated Press reports.

Earlier in the week, Mayor Arturo Garino told the local Nogales International that the razor wire was "lethal" to the town's residents.

"Placing coiled concertina wire strands on the ground is typically only found in a war, battlefield, or prison setting, and not in an urban setting", the city council's resolution reads. The small Arizona border city is fighting back against the installation of razor fencing that now covers the entirety of a tall border fence.

Central Americans are increasingly entering the United States illegally in groups of at least 100 people in rugged, remote stretches of the Mexican border, authorities said Friday upon releasing January figures that show total arrests fell for a second straight month.

City officials say Army troops installed more horizontal layers of the wire along the border wall last weekend.

Officers of the Mexican equivalent of U.S. Customs and Border Protection reportedly surrounded the truck and discovered the driver dead. Entry to the US was not affected.

There was a similar incident at a different Nogales port almost three years ago. Illegal crossings in that area have dropped steeply in recent years.
