Serial killer Bruce McArthur sentenced to 25 years in prison

For years, members of Toronto's gay community warned that there was a serial killer on the loose, that vulnerable men were going missing, that the streets were not safe.

That waiting period would have left McArthur ineligible for parole until the age of 116, beyond his expected natural lifespan.

That's the number of years Bruce McArthur gets for each of the torture murders of Selim Esen, Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi, Skandaraj Navaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi, Kirushna Kanagaratnam, Dean Lisowick and Andrew Kinsman.

McArthur pleaded guilty last week to eight counts of first-degree murder.

The Toronto serial killings shocked Canada and its gay community, with mayor John Tory calling McArthur "a monster who preyed on the city".

McMahon noted how all the friends and families had been victimized twice - searching fruitlessly for their loved ones when they went missing, only to learn they'd been murdered. Some victims' remains were found in the planters of homes where McArthur did landscape contracting. "He also exploited others through a belief he was their friend", McMahon said.

The crown wanted 50 years but I think 200 - 25 years for eight slain men to be served consecutively - would have sent a stronger message. He called their dismemberments pure evil, but said the guilty plea spared a jury four months of gruesome evidence.

Fearing John would become McArthur's ninth victim, three officers, including Dickinson, went up to his apartment and arrested him when he opened the door.

"I am satisfied with the sentence", Homicide Insp.

But then he said "two factors unique to this case" prevented him from doing so.

"This is a crime of stark horror", Cantlon said in a statement. Top row, from left to right: Skandaraj Navaratnam, Andrew Kinsman, Selim Esen and Abdulbasir Faizi.

Toronto police said they have no plans to release his mugshot.

Meaghan Gray, a spokeswoman for Toronto Police, had said that over the years law enforcement had launched two investigations, Project Houston and Project Prism, "to do everything possible to locate the missing men".

Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam's mother, brother and cousin, who came to Toronto from Sri Lanka, appeared outside the courthouse following the sentence; his mother wiping away tears.

An entry in Kinsman's calendar indicated who he had planned to meet that afternoon: "Bruce". I do not see Bruce McArthur seeing daylight.

Going off that lead, police eventually placed McArthur under recurring surveillance and gathered sufficient evidence to arrest him on January 18, 2018, when officers saw him bring a Middle Eastern man into his east Toronto apartment complex - a man they subsequently found naked and handcuffed to McArthur's bed.

There is now an independent review of how police treat missing persons cases, after outcry over how McArthur was able to kill undetected for seven years.

"I do not see him in a public setting ever again", Toronto Police chief Mark Saunders said at the news conference.

It's hard to know what a parole board will hand a 92-year-old McArthur in 2045. Also discussed was McArthur's habit of taking pictures of his victims in various costumes, according to The Washington Post.
