Benjamin Mendy's 'joke' Hong Kong trip backfires with Man City boss Guardiola

Benjamin Mendy's 'joke' Hong Kong trip backfires with Man City boss Guardiola

The French defender, who is recovering from injury, posted a video of himself earlier today on Instagram with the caption "Hong Kong International Airport".

Guardiola confirmed the 24-year-old is injured at present, his last appearance coming last month in the 1-0 League Cup semi final second leg win over Burton Albion.

Mendy quickly took to Twitter to clear his name, joking that he didn't want any problems with Guardiola. "Yesterday he was in Barcelona", said Guardiola.

It remains to be seen what Guardiola makes of Mendy's latest Instagram post but he certainly seemed put out when he was told he could be in Hong Kong, by appearing to swear in front of Sky Sports' live cameras.

"It will definitely not be okay if he is Hong Kong."
Meniscus. It is not easy. You can't return and train for two days and then you are fit. I didn't know it. F--, he's a lucky guy!

It is not the first time Mendy's social media usage has got him into hot water with Guardiola this season.

Asking the press officer, Guardiola said: "Did you know?" Guardiola also responded to Aleksander Ceferin after Uefa's president claimed City lacked class for failing to attend a meeting this week regarding VAR.

"Before he went he said "I'm going one day to Paris", and that's OK because that's here, but Hong Kong is far away, so I don't know".

In Mendy's absence, City reclaimed top spot on the Premier League in midweek with a 2-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park.
