Super Bowl ads heavy on humor, surprises and ... robots

It was turning out to be another silly Bud Light ad, where the King and Queen were enjoying a couple of beers and about to watch the Bud Knight triumph during a joust.

But the corn lobby was quick to take offense - and to pounce on Bud Light's anti-corn syrup message.

Adding insult to injury, the commercial - which aired during the fourth quarter of the New England Patriots' 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams - was seen by the lowest Super Bowl viewing audience in a decade, according to initial overnight ratings.

During Super Bowl Sunday, fans of both were treated to a special moment when the hit series revealed its return date in the midst of a Bud Light commercial. We were more interested in the big-budget ads that auto companies showed - and didn't show - this year. We're all presuming the Bud Knight is now dead.

"America's corn farmers are disappointed in you", the National Corn Growers Association wrote on Twitter, responding to the ad.

Anheuser-Busch said it "fully supports" corn growers and will continue to invest in the industry.

Jeff Bezos pulled a $20 million Super Bowl commercial for his space exploration company, Blue Origin, due to his relationship with Lauren Sanchez. "This effort is to provide consumers transparency and elevate the beer category". During 2017's second half, Bud Light was running ads stressing the simplicity and quality of its ingredients simultaneously with the then-new "Dilly Dilly" campaign ads.

The ad - which AdWeek described as "savage" - ran for a full minute.

Others thought the brewing fight was fitting. But Bud Light only called attention to the use of corn syrup rather than high fructose corn syrup, which has had some of its glucose converted into fructose.
