Measles - Get vaccinated now

And in the US, 18 states allow parents to opt-out of vaccinations for personal beliefs. About 94 percent of students in Ada County and 95 percent in Canyon County are assumed to be immunized, based on exemption records for their schools.

"What a lot of people don't realize is that it's one of the most contagious viruses we've ever known". And the potentially deadly disease is making a comeback mostly in unvaccinated children: Of the total reported cases, 32 were in unvaccinated people, 25 of whom were children under the age of 10.

A measure introduced by Republican Rep. Paul Harris of Vancouver, Washington - the epicenter of the current outbreak - would remove the personal exemption specifically for the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, or MMR.

"People are feeling extremely oppressed and feeling like they can't make an educated decision", said Barbara Loe Fisher, co-founder and president of the group. The King County measles case involved a middle-aged man who visited Clark County where he likely contracted the virus and has since recovered. Schools in Idaho, Shoshone, Lemhi, Valley and Camas counties also had double-digit exemption rates.

California state Sen. Richard Pan, a pediatrician who sponsored his state's bill, said he got death threats over it and had anti-vaccination advocates jam his phone lines and harass him on social media.

We need most people in the population to be vaccinated in order to maintain our "herd immunity".

The good news for Treasure Valley parents is that local schools have pretty high rates of children being up-to-date on their MMR shots. But it is still a big problem in other parts of the world, and travelers infected overseas can bring the virus back and spread it, causing periodic outbreaks.

Symptoms of measles can often be similar to cold or flu symptoms, including: fever, diarrhea, coughing, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and fatigue.

The CDC also says 81 people brought measles into the USA from other countries last year-the greatest number of imported cases since the measles was eliminated from the U.S.in 2000. Serious complications include brain swelling that can cause blindness or deafness and pneumonia. People are considered infectious from four days before to four days after the appearance of the rash.

People may have been exposed to the disease at about four dozen locations, including Portland International Airport and a Portland Trail Blazers game, officials said.

Nearly everyone who is not immune will get measles if they are exposed to the measles virus.
