Arizona governor: 'sickened' by impregnation of disabled woman

A former Hacienda HealthCare employee had nothing but praise for Nathan Sutherland, who is accused of sexually assaulting an incapacitated woman who gave birth last month.

Sutherland's wife filed for divorce from her husband before the woman in his care gave birth, reports CBS Phoenix. Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said on January 23, 2019, that investigators arrested Sutherland on one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse.

Sutherland was arrested Tuesday after investigators obtained a DNA sample that matched the DNA of the child that was born at the facility.

Two doctors from the Hacienda HealthCare facility have left after an incapacitated patient gave birth. It also prompted authorities to test the DNA of all the men who worked at the Hacienda HealthCare facility. The Arizona State Board of Nursing is set to determine whether to suspend Sutherland's practical nursing license Friday.

Hacienda HealthCare officials said that Sutherland, who doesn't appear to have a criminal record, went through a thorough background check when he was hired.

"Every member of the Hacienda organization is troubled beyond words to think that a licensed practical nurse could be capable of seriously harming a patient", the statement said.

Esella Burr said Wednesday that 36-year-old Nathan Sutherland was her neighbour for more than five years until he sold his Phoenix-area home in October.

Police spokesman Sergeant Tommy Thompson said: "We have no indication that there were other people involved, but again, this is an ongoing investigation". Sutherland, 36, is the father based on a court-ordered DNA match.

The woman, 29, is unable to speak, has limited mobility in her limbs and face and is unable to breathe or feed herself without assistance.

In the interview, Sutherland and his sister, who were ultimately adopted, said they had released one album and were working on another.

"But you can't stop what you were made to do", Sutherland said about making music, adding that he started writing songs at the age of 10. He has yet to enter a plea. "Even though it's an orphanage, you'll be blessed if you have one cup or bowl of rice a day". He and his sister formed Sleeplessouljaz, a Christian rap group. He is a licensed practical nurse, a position which usually entails caring for people who are sick, injured, convalescent or disabled.

According to the articles of incorporation for Life in You Inc., the nonprofit aimed to "show Christ's unconditional love by responding to the spiritual and physical needs" of youth who were homeless, developmentally disabled, behaviorally challenged or orphaned in Phoenix and Maricopa County.

"I suspected others, but I was wrong, and he fooled everybody", Gomez said, CBS affiliate KPHO-TV reported. He also mentioned that he liked his job as a nurse.
