NASRDA: Nigeria to experience total lunar eclipse Monday

Best viewing of the one-hour total eclipse will be from North and South America, with as many as 2.8 billion people able to see it from the Western Hemisphere, Europe, West Africa and northernmost Russian Federation.

The best time to catch the maximum eclipse is around 5.12am, when the moon will be completely submerged within the Earth's shadow.

The next partial lunar eclipse will be this summer, on July 16, but will be visible only in Africa and portions of Asia.

What is a lunar eclipse? . This light appears reddish for the same reason that a sunset or sunrise does. The upcoming supermoon will be about 357,300km away. The eclipse will last 3.5 hours, with totality lasting 63 minutes. "It's about an hour".

The moon may appear blood red or brick-red depending upon the weather condition in given areas. This is because light from the sun still gets through Earth's atmosphere. That's why an eclipsed moon is sometimes known as a blood moon. The "wolf" part refers to a full moon in January.

The second phase of an eclipse sees the earth's fuller and darker shadow, the umbra, stretch across the face of the moon causing it to appear red and giving it the name "blood moon".

Are you excited for tonight's eclipse?

Nope! You'll be able to see it with the naked eye.

Hartigan said, "It's just a wonderful thing for the whole family to see because it's fairly rare to have all these things kind of come together at the same time". This particular eclipse is even more special than usual, as the Moon will be a tad closer to us than it normally is.

If you miss it, you'll have to wait two years for the next one - the next total eclipse won't happen until 2021, and the next blood moon will only be visible in our region in 2022.

If skies aren't overcast, the lunar eclipse will be visible to anyone.
