Seven People Killed, 33 Injured as Bus Rolls Over in Cuba

The bus which belonged to the company Via Azul was carrying 40 passengers including 22 foreigners from countries of Argentina, Canada, Spain, the United States, France, the Netherlands and Mexico.

A number of locals and tourists including Canadians were on board a deadly bus crash in Cuba that killed seven people.

The injured passengers have been hospitalized and five of them, including two foreigners, are now in a critical condition.

The names of those killed were not released Friday, but officials said late in the day that two Argentines, one French citizen, one German and three Cubans died.

A spokeswoman said: "We continue to seek further information from the Cuban authorities following a road traffic accident, and are ready to assist any British people who require our help".

The accident occurred on the winding mountain road linking Baracoa to Guantanamo when the driver tried to overtake another vehicle on a slippery road, according to the reports.

Viazul operates buses between many large towns on Cuba and is a popular travel choice for tourists on the Caribbean island.

Cuban highways are poorly lit, narrow and rutted with huge potholes.

Thursday's crash is the fourth major bus accident in a month.
