United States bus driver rescues child found wandering barefoot

"She did a lot more than her job".

Irena Ivic, a driver for the Milwaukee County Transit System, was stunned when she saw a young child running barefoot down a highway overpass on the morning of December 22. The child, who was less than one year old at the time of the incident, was barefoot and wearing only a onesie and diaper, CBS News reported. Ivic-Drobnjak stops her bus and jumps out, stops traffic and runs toward the crying boy who seems to know she's coming for him; he stops and looks toward her. "I don't take that kind of compassion for granted".

In the annotated video from the Milwaukee County Transit System uploaded to YouTube, viewers see Ivic-Drobnjak cradle the child as a young female passenger offers her coat and the two bundle the baby up.

Authorities say the child was cold and frightened, but otherwise OK.

A passenger gave her coat to help keep the boy warm as Ivic called for help.

Firefighters and police soon arrived on the scene. The baby was unharmed.

"Oh my God, I'm shaking", Ivic can be heard saying when she returns to the bus with the girl. The baby was left outside by his mother, who may have been suffering from a mental health crisis, according to MCTS.

Ivic has been in Milwaukee for 12 years - and an employee of MCTS for five years.

"If it's a sad thing that its the ninth time than an MCTS driver has had to help a lost child get back to their family it is an extraordinary thing that we have drivers like Irena who are there to do it without hesitation", Abele added.
