Syrian air defenses intercept Israeli missiles targeting Damascus: army

Lebanon's acting Transport Minister Youssef Fenianos confirmed Russia's account, saying the two airplanes in Lebanese airspace "narrowly" escaped Israeli warplanes, averting a "human catastrophe".

Al Arabiya quoted the Syrian state news agency SANA as stating that one of the airport warehouses was hit during the attack.

Syrian air defenses have managed to destroy most of the missiles fired by Israeli warplanes toward the capital Damascus, Syrian state media say.

"At 11:15, Israeli fighter jets fired several missiles towards the area of Damascus, and instantly, our air defences confronted the missiles and downed a lot of them", the source told SANA. Explosions were heard in one of the videos.

Syrian state media broadcast footage of what it said were the air defenses firing, with bright lights seen shooting across the night sky.

Syria on Saturday said it filed complaints with the UN Security Council and with UN Secretary-General Antonia Guterres over alleged Israeli airstrikes on Friday near Damascus.

Israeli officials made no statement on Friday's reports, but seldom comment on alleged strikes.

Since then Israel has been very careful with its operation over Syria.

Israel has mounted attacks in Syria as part of its efforts to counter the influence carved out there by Iran, which is supporting President Bashar al-Assad in the war that erupted in 2011.

The previous such reported airstrike occurred on Christmas Day.

In September a Russian military plane was accidentally shot down by Syrian anti-aircraft fire that was attempting to block Israeli missiles.

The S-300 systems were delivered to Syria late a year ago, but they are not yet believed to be in use, as the Syrian air defense teams still need to be trained to operate them.
