The door of Jayme's family home near Barron 100km away had been blasted down with a shotgun in October, her parents gunned down, and Jayme abducted.

The girl was Jayme Closs, who had been missing since October, when her parents were found dead, having been shot and killed in their home in Barron, Wisconsin, about an hour away.

Patterson is charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and one count of kidnapping.

I didn't know he was my neighbor until Jayme said 'Jake took me'.

Jeanne Nutter says Jayme is the hero in this story. "She said she did not know him".

Fitzgerald says authorities don't know of any social media connection between Patterson and the girl. Glynn and Jones say they're relying on "the integrity of our judicial system" to treat him fairly.

Patterson was scheduled for an initial court appearance Monday. Smart was just 14 years old when a couple kidnapped her from her Salt Lake City home in 2002. The discovery ended an all-out search that gripped the state, with many people fearing the worst.

Jayme was pictured smiling alongside her relieved aunt Jennifer Naiberg Smith, who gave permission for the image to be used after their emotional reunion. Kasinskas said. Police were called - but before they arrived, Jayme told them that she'd been held in the Gordon area, near Kasinskas' home, by someone who killed her parents on the night she disappeared. He had no contact with any of the Closs family that we've been able to determine at this time. "It will be a long road but we are family strong and we love this little girl so much!"

Another aunt, Sue Naiberg Allard, posted that Jayme got "the most awaited hug ever" when he returned home. "She did not talk about why or how".

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said investigators are trying to figure out what happened to Jayme during her captivity and why she was seized.

Police said they sent three teams to tell family members at various locations that she had been found, including one group that was attending a basketball game.

"I know all of you are searching for the answer why any of this happened", Fitzgerald said.

"My kids and I - we went downstairs", she said.

The sheriff said that he did not know whether Jayme had been physically abused.

"We believe Jayme was the target, and he (Patterson) was getting rid of possible barriers to taking her", Fitzgerald told CNN's Jean Casarez on Saturday.

He wonders whether Patterson was somehow stalking Jayme.

The teen was able to escape from a cabin before flagging down a pedestrian walking her dog in the town of Gordon.

She said, 'I'm Jayme, ' the woman told CNN affiliate WCCO. No one pressed her to talk, he said, adding that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and doctors advised them to let her speak when she's ready. Police are still investigating and say 'she is doing as well as circumstances allow'.

Authorities have released few details about Patterson, who has no previous criminal record in Wisconsin, saying they were unsure whether he had known Closs.

He may have worked at another business in Barron but that hasn't been confirmed, the sheriff said.

The president of the Jennie-O Turkey store in Barron, where James and Denise Closs had worked for decades, said Patterson had been an employee there for a single day three years ago.
