9 injured in Paris gas explosion

The explosion is thought to have been caused by a gas leak in a bakery, according to French journalist Catherine Fournier.

A police source said the explosion tore apart a bakery on the rue Trevise in the Grands Boulevards district.

The explosion came amid heavy security in Paris and around France for the ninth successive weekend of yellow vest protests.

Pictures and videos posted online show plumes of smoke and flames slowly consuming one of the buildings. Paris police tweeted to warn the public to "avoid the area and allow the passage of the emergency vehicles".

A fire broke out after the blast at around 9am (0800 GMT) in the busy 9th district of the city, which police suspect may have been caused by a gas leak.

At least 20 people have been reported injured.

Firefighters showed up at the scene shortly after the explosion. Witnesses described on French television the overwhelmingly sound of the blast and people trapped inside nearby buildings.
