Harrington to skipper Europe at 2020 Ryder Cup

"Great news to wake up to", said Donald, who played on three Ryder Cup teams with Harrington in 2004, 2006 and 2010. "It seems to be the right time and place for me in my career".

"It's something I thought long and hard about". Was it the right time?

"I have played under many wonderful European captains since I made my debut 20 years ago and I would like to think that my captaincy will be a mix of all of them", Harrington told reporters.

"I think Steve will be a nice Ryder Cup captain".

The Irishman will become the third captain from the Emerald Isle in four Ryder Cups.

The three-times major victor, 47, will become the third player from Ireland - after Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke - to captain Europe in just four Ryder Cups. He has 15 European Tour victories and six on the PGA Tour.

Like Harrington, Stricker has been a three-time Ryder Cup vice-captain and with Harrington is confident Sticker will be a formidable opponent in 2020. "It's an away match", Harrington said.

"I've learned from all of them", he said.

"It really came down to whether I wanted to be in the hat and put what is a successful career, put it on the line".

"You can't do everything as a captain, your very much defined by the quality of your vice-captains and you have to rely on them a lot".

Harrington himself is a 50/1 chance to qualify automatically for the team, while Sergio Garcia is an odds-on 1/3 shot to be part of Harrington's line-up, despite an infamous frosty relationship with the captain which was said to have improved after clear-the-air talks.

"I'm really conscious that I have to find the edge and add to it. It's going to take a great deal of my time over the next 18 months figuring out how can I make our team play to the best of their ability".

Alongside Lee Westwood, Graeme McDowell, Robert Karlsson and Luke Donald - all former team mates - Harrington helped guide Thomas Bjørn's charges to glory at Le Golf National. "If we were coming back to Hazeltine it would be another question of my appetite to go there. I want to be a winning captain".

"And secondly the course is a European-style of course, it's windy and has a links-feel to it".

"Home advantage is a huge part of it, there's no doubt about it, " Harrington said.

"He is a young player, who is a world champion, and we are very happy and proud that we could secure such a player for FC Bayern".

"You know when you're going up against a guy like that that he is mentally tough and strong".

"Selfishly I looked at a golf course and felt, I'm somewhat, it's not going to be".

"I know there's words there, but the actions nowhere near match up".

The expected to name its 2020 captain sometime this spring.

He spent countless hours analysing all manner of statistics for his own team as well as the opposition, and he took Ryder Cup captaincy to a new level.
