Andy Murray announces he plans to retire from tennis in near future

'I'm not feeling good, ' he said. "I said to my team, 'Look, I think I can get through this until Wimbledon.' That's where I'd like to stop playing". I played him in his prime when he was virtually unbeatable. He then became emotional and left the room for several minutes to compose himself.

In his Instagram Murray had described the effects of a stubborn hip injury with words such as "demoralising", "hurting inside", and even including a picture of himself as a little boy, read less like a routine medical update than a cry for help. He apologized to a fan after winning just two games against No. 1 Novak Djokovic during a practice match Thursday.

The draw for the first Grand Slam of the season was made on Thursday and the top seeds could face some early tests of their title credentials when play gets underway on Monday.

A tearful Andy Murray has said this week's Australian Open in Melbourne could be the last tournament he plays in his career.

The three-time Grand Slam champion was driven to tears as he made the announcement to a room of journalists and revealed that the extent of his pain means he can not put socks on without struggling.

He insisted he would still try to play at the Australian Open but added "the pain is too much really. Some athletes have had that and gone back to competing but there's obviously no guarantees with that and the reason for having an operation like that is not to return to professional sport, it's just for a better quality of life".

Federer's first-round test comes in the shape of Istomin, an Uzbek whom Federer has defeated in each of their six meetings, and they are in the same quarter of the draw as Andy Murray, who is unseeded and meets Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut first up.

Djokovic heads long-time rival Rafael Nadal and defending champion Roger Federer, with young-gun Alexander Zverev seeded four as he targets a maiden Grand Slam title.
