Patrick McCaw plans sign Toronto Raptors after Cleveland Cavaliers release

Cleveland's alibi is that it had roster in shambles, reduced to nine available players against the Miami Heat last Wednesday after the injuries to Rodney Hood and David Nwaba, as well as both of their two-way players starting out their season in the G League.

The league is investigating for a potential agreement between McCaw or his agent, Bill Duffy, and the Cavs on a promise of waiving him before the deadline.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, McCaw will sign a deal with the Raptors following his release from the Cleveland Cavaliers. After clearing the waiver wire, the third-year wing became an unrestricted free agent. He began the season under control by the Golden State Warriors but was signed by the Cavaliers to a two-year, $6 million non-guaranteed offer sheet on December 28. After passing on the Golden State Warriors' qualifying offer this summer, McCaw found it hard to find another offer. "But if the National Basketball Association voided McCaw's contract, he could become a restricted free agent again".

If the Cavs and McCaw arranged to waive McCaw before the contract was official, it would be a violation of league rules and could result in some dire consequences.Namely, the Cavs could be fined and be lose their first-round pick.

Now, McCaw joins Toronto's bench as the Raptors pursue an Eastern Conference championship. They were able to get McCaw for a minimum salary for the remainder of the season, a signing that would have earned them many accolades if it happened during the summer. "With McCaw averaging only 1.7 points on 22.2 percent shooting in 17.7 minutes through three games, the Cavaliers then waived McCaw on Sunday to sign free-agent guard Cameron Payne to a 10-day contract".
