"The big networks went back and forth on whether or not they would air it", Kimmel said.

There is widespread agreement that anchors and reporters will be under pressure to fact-check and contextualize whatever Trump says.

And the deeper numbers indicate those tuning in are more likely to be opposed to Trump's request for $5.7 billion in funding for a border wall.

"It's like the patient zero of fake news", Wallace added.

Fox News averaged 8 million viewers from 9-9:30 p.m. ET, while MSNBC averaged 4.2 million and CNN averaged 3.6 million sets of eyeballs.

Immediately following Trump's approximately 10 minute speech, Smith broke down a "number of claims" that were deliberately misleading. Interestingly, the Trump speech from the White House and the Democrats' response from the Capital building were perfectly matched on FNC, which will not be good news to that frequent viewer at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. "But that was a bipartisan announcement, and this is an overtly political move by the White House".

Not even Fox News was having Donald Trump's lies about border security following his prime time address on Tuesday night. Naturally, late-night hosts had a field day with all this. Fox News was second with 8.04 million. So the four major broadcasters and cable news networks showed him, while also airing rebuttals from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and making provisions of their own to pounce on misstatements.

Following Tuesday night's coverage, the liberal watchdog organization Media Matters for America said the network fact-checking was ineffective.
