Jets to hire Adam Gase as head coach

Jets to hire Adam Gase as head coach

He was sacked, as expected, immediately after the 2018 season.

The former Green Bay Packers head coach has only interviewed with the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns thus far.

Gase, 40, went 23-26 in three seasons with the Dolphins, including to the playoffs in 2016.

McCarthy was sacked as the Packers' head coach mid-way through the 2018 season. He is set to become the first Jets head coach with previous National Football League head-coaching experience since Bill Parcells was hired by the franchise in 1997.

Gase followed coach John Fox to Chicago in 2015 to be the Bears' offensive coordinator.

The Jets finished the 2018 season 4-12 and last in the AFC East.

Multiple sources say the Jets wanted to make sure they hired the right coach to help develop Sam Darnold. The former first-round pick threw for 2,865 yards, 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 13 games during his rookie campaign.

Just before news of the Gase hiring broke Wednesday night, the Daily News' Manish Mehta reported that Rhule had removed his name from consideration because he would not agree to a staff that was put together by GM Mike Maccagnan and VP of Player Personnel Brian Heimerdinger. However, Rhule reportedly pulled out of contention for the job after being told he wouldn't be given control to hire his own assistants, per SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.
