Denver Broncos hire Bears' Vic Fangio as head coach

Denver Broncos hire Bears' Vic Fangio as head coach

With Fangio already getting attention outside of Chicago last year and even more success to show it for it the year later it is no surprise to hear that he has accepted a head coaching position for the Denver Broncos. The Broncos fired Joseph on December 31 after his second season as head coach. The fans calling for Joseph's firing began voicing their complaints early on this season and continued speaking up until general manager John Elway gave Joseph the boot following the team's final game of the season. Fangio represents the first defensive-minded coach to get a head-coaching job during this hiring cycle after one-fourth of the league canned their coaches and mostly started looking for 'The Next Sean McVay'.

He replaces Vance Joseph, who posted the franchise's first back-to-back losing seasons since 1971-72 and was sacked on New Year's Eve with an 11-21 record.

Before the Bears, he served as defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014, he held the same title for the Houston Texans (2002-2005), Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001) and Carolina Panthers (1995-1998).

The hires mean that only the Jets, Dolphins and Bengals remain in the hunt for their next head coach.

With Joseph out and Fangio in, the Broncos will look to capitalize on the plethora of talent the team has on the defensive side of the ball. This past season, Chicago owned the top defense in points allowed and against the run while ranking third in total yards allowed and seventh against the pass. Fangio was interviewed for the Bears' head coaching job in January of 2018, but that job went to Matt Nagy. I want the guys that understand the game, they understand Xs and Os but also have the ability to lead men. He's led the Bears' defense since 2015.

With the National Football League becoming an offensive showcase of fireworks and big plays, having a stout defense has almost become a lost art.

This is a team that was built on defense last season.
