Phillies, White Sox interested in Moustakas

As ESPN's Jeff Passan reported, the Tulowitzki addition doesn't eliminate the Yankees from also targeting free agent Manny Machado. Fast forward to today, January 8th, and the White Sox are now in agreement with free agent outfielder Jon Jay on a one-year deal.

Jay could help the Sox offensively for 2019 while prospects such as Luis Robert and Luis Alexander Basabe get more time to develop in the minors. But astute fans will remember this is the second such acquisition for the White Sox this offseason.

After acquiring Machado's brother-in-law, Yonder Alonso, and signing one of his best friends, Jon Jay, the next logical move for general manager Rick Hahn is calling the Cubs' Theo Epstein about the availability of Machado's cousin, Albert Almora Jr. His experience could help a mostly young Sox team that could possibly contend in 2019.

This isn't just a matter of three players who know each other well.

With a little more than a month before spring training, their slow-motion pursuit of Machado appears to be gaining steam with the signing of Jay, a journeyman outfielder who wouldn't seem to be a big deal in the Sox rebuild unless he was brought in as an enticement to Machado. "We're from the same neighborhoods, the same culture, so its just natural for us to stick together", Jay said.

For now, all the South Siders can do is play the waiting game as they are the only team that currently has an offer on the table.

The Phillies and White Sox are "monitoring the marketplace" for the 30-year-old third baseman, according to a report from MLB Network, which cites unidentified league sources.

We all see what you're doing here, White Sox.
