Jets Seem ‘Enamored’ With Ex-Packers Coach Mike McCarthy

The University of Southern California has so far denied the Jets and Cardinals the opportunity to interview its offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsbury, according to ESPN.

Since firing Todd Bowles, the Jets have shown interest in an extensive list of names as they search for a new head coach. He wasn't on the open market for long, as the Trojans scooped him up for their vacant offensive coordinator position. Those moves come a month after the National Football League told teams that they would be expected to request and receive permission from college athletic directors to speak to staff members or they'd face punishments for "conduct detrimental", just as one would for speaking to coaches employed by National Football League teams without permission of those organizations. The new head coach will have to build QB Sam Darnold who was the Jets 3rd overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. "NFL clubs that fail to follow these protocols may be subject to disciplinary action for conduct detrimental to the league". In six seasons in Lubbock, Kingsbury, a former quarterback at Texas Tech, was 35-40 with only two winning seasons. Kingsbury, 39, replaces Tee Martin at USC, who was dismissed by coach Clay Helton in November. The Trojans are hoping Kingsbury can revitalize an offense that finished 91st nationally last season with an average of 26.1 points per game and 63rd nationally with 5.78 yards per play. In 2012, he helped Johnny Manziel win a Heisman Trophy with the Aggies.
