Roger Federer win cancelled out by Angelique Kerber in Hopman Cup final

Roger Federer win cancelled out by Angelique Kerber in Hopman Cup final

It was Switzerland's fourth title overall, behind only the United States with six, and Federer first won the Hopman Cup back in 2001 when he teamed with Martina Hingis.

It was a much tougher opening than last year's Hopman final when Federer eked out a 6-7 6-0 6-2 victory over Zverev, the Swiss great partnering Belinda Bencic to Switzerland's third Perth mixed teams title in the deciding mixed after Bencic lost her singles match to Angie Kerber.

"I'm happy I'm feeling this good and playing as well as I am", Federer said.

After overpowering a stubborn Ebden, Zverev said he and Kerber were motivated by last year's loss in the final.

In what is tipped to be the final edition of the unique tournament, the best was saved for last as Federer became the first player to win 3 Hopman Cups, teaming with Belinda Bencic for the duo's second consecutive title.

Earlier, Federer had been in sublime form as he defeated 21-year-old German Zverev 6-4, 6-2 in the men's singles.

Roger Federer has sent fans into a frenzy with a attractive moment with wife Mirka after the Hopman Cup final. I'm OK either way, but this was not to get a racket from her, this was just a spontaneous 'Why don't you keep the racket?' because her coach had already taken all her bags off the court, which I couldn't believe.

Federer has beaten Frances Tiafoe, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Cameron Norrie and Zverev in straight sets and will be full of confidence heading into Melbourne Park later this month.

"I'm very happy about these records, but I didn't come here for that", Federer said.

American superstar Serena, who was playing in Perth for the fifth time in her career and has won the title twice, said she was unaware of speculation on the Hopman's fate, but that she was upset by the prospect of it vanishing.

The tiebreaker too had its twists, Kerber needing three match points to seal the win. "It's been a super pleasure teaming with Belinda".

In a see-sawing men's singles match, veteran David Ferrer was in early control but ultimately needed a third set tie-break to win 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/2) after a typically lengthy rally on match point.

"We will remember it for the rest of our lives, especially how it ended", Zverev said.

Saturday's final took on extra significance given there's a strong chance it will be the last ever Hopman Cup.

"It is good to finish on a singles performance like this", he said. "I'm a bit surprised the matches have gone as well as they have", the 37-year-old added.
